early to mid game just stack as much hangars as you can. the later the game goes the less of an impact defensive starbases have. best you can do is stack plattform with ion cannons and maybe some large guns and hope for an alpha strike. usually they only are usefull if combined with a defensive flleet. in general prioritize modules over platforms.All you need to do is open the Outliner, click on your shipyard, and then click on the third possible tab. When you design a ship from scratch, it starts with 0 shields and armor, but by adding defensive components you increase this value.Should always be at least half of your fleet unless facing lots of cruisers.
